Indian Astronomy
In India the first references to astronomy are to be found in the Rig Veda which is dated around 2000 B.C. Vedic Aryans in fact deified the Sun, Stars and Comets. Astronomy was then interwoven with astrology and since ancient times Indians have involved the planets (called Grahas) with the determination of human fortunes. The planets Shani, i.e. Saturn and Mangal i.e. Mars were considered inauspicious. In the working out of horoscopes (called Janmakundali), the position of the Navagrahas, nine planets plus Rahu and Ketu (mythical demons, evil forces) was considered. The Janmakundali was a complex mixture of science and dogma. But the concept was born out of astronomical observations and perception based on astronomical phenomenon. In ancient times personalities like Aryabhatta and Varahamihira were associated with Indian astronomy. It would be surprising for us to know today that this science had advanced to such an extent in ancient India that ancient Indian astronomers had recognised that stars are same as the sun, that the sun is center of the universe (solar system) and that the circumference of the earth is 5000 Yojanas. One Yojana being 7.2 kms., the ancient Indian estimates came close to the actual figure. In Indian languages, the science of Astronomy is today called Khagola-shastra. The word Khagola perhaps is derived from the famous astronomical observatory at the University of Nalanda which was called Khagola. It was at Khagola that the famous 5th century Indian Astronomer Aryabhatta studied and extended the subject. Aryabhatta is said to have been born in 476 A.D. at a town called Ashmaka in today"s Indian state of Kerala. When he was still a young boy he had been sent to the University of Nalanda to study astronomy. He made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. He also propounded the Heliocentric theory of gravitation, thus predating Copernicus by almost one thousand years. Aryabhatta"s Magnum Opus, the Aryabhattiya was translated into Latin in the 13th century. Through this translation, European mathematicians got to know methods for calculating the areas of triangles, volumes of spheres as well as square and cube root. Aryabhatta"s ideas about eclipses and the sun being the source of moonlight may not have caused much of an impression on European astronomers as by then they had come to know of these facts throught the observations of Copernicus and Galileo. But considering that Aryabhatta discovered these facts 1500 years ago, and 1000 years before Copernicus and Galileo makes him a pioneer in this area too. Aryabhatta"s methods of astronomical calculations expounded in his Aryabhatta-siddhanta were reliable for practical purposes of fixing the Panchanga (Hindu calendar). Thus in ancient India, eclipses were also forecast and their true nature was perceived at least by the astronomers. The lack of a telescope hindered further advancement of ancient Indian astronomy. Though it should be admitted that with their unaided observations with crude instruments, the astronomers in ancient India were able to arrive at near perfect measurement of astronomical movements and predict eclipses. Indian astronomers also propounded the theory that the earth was a sphere. Aryabhatta was the first one to have propounded this theory in the 5th century. Another Indian astronomer, Brahmagupta estimated in the 7th century that the circumference of the earth was 5000 yojanas. A yojana is around 7.2 kms. Calculating on this basis we see that the estimate of 36,000 kms as the earth"s circumference comes quite close to the actual circumference known today. There is an old Sanskrit Sloka (couplet) which is as follows: "Sarva Dishanaam, Suryaha, Suryaha, Suryaha." This couplet means that there are suns in all directions. This couplet which describes the night sky as full of suns, indicates that in ancient times Indian astronomers had arrived at the important discovery that the stars visible at night are similar to the Sun visible during day time. In other words, it was recognised that the sun is also a star, though the nearest one. This understanding is demonstrated in another sloka which says that when one sun sinks below the horizon, a thousand suns take its place. This apart, many Indian astronomers had formulated ideas about gravity and gravitation. Brahmagupta, in the 7th century had said about gravity that "Bodies fall towards the earth as it is in the nature of the earth to attract bodies, just as it is in the nature of water to flow". About a hundred years before Brahmagupta, another astronomer, Varahamihira had claimed for the first time perhaps that there should be a force which might be keeping bodies stuck to the earth, and also keeping heavenly bodies in their determined places. Thus the concept of the existence of some tractive force that governs the falling of objects to the earth and their remaining stationary after having once fallen; as also determining the positions which heavenly bodies occupy, was recognised. It was also recognised that this force is a tractive force. The Sanskrit term for gravity is Gurutvakarshan which is an amalgam of Guru-tva-akarshan. Akarshan means to be attracted Thus the fact that the character of this force was of attraction was also recognised. This apart, it seems that the function of attracting heavenly bodies was attributed to the sun. The term Guru-tva-akarshan can be interpreted to mean, "to the attracted by the Master". The sun was recognised by all ancient people to be the source of light and warmth. Among the Aryans the sun was deifled. The sun (Surya) was one of the chief deities in the Vedas. He was recognised as the source of light (Dinkara), source of warmth (Bhaskara). In the Vedas he is also referred to as the source of all life, the centre of creation and the centre of the spheres. The last statement is suggestive of the sun being recognised as the centre of the universe (solar system). The idea that the sun was looked upon as the power that attracts heavenly bodies is supported by the virile terms like Raghupati and Aditya used in referring to the sun. While the male gender is applied to refer to the sun, the earth (Prithivi, Bhoomi, etc.,) is generally referred to as a female. The literal meaning of the term Gurutvakarshan also supports the recognition of the heliocentric theory, as the term Guru corresponds with the male gender, hence it could not have referred to the earth which was always referred to as a female. Many ancient Indian astronomers have also referred to the concept of heliocentrism. Aryabhata has suggested it in his treatise Aryabhattiya. Bhaskaracharya has also made references to it in his Magnum Opus Siddhanta-Shiromani. But it has to be conceded that the heliocentric theory of gravitation was also developed in ancient times (i.e. around 500 B.C.) by Greek astronomers. What supports the contention that it could have existed in India before the Greek astronomers developed it, is that in Vedic literature the Sun is referred to as the "centre of spheres" alongwith the term Guru-tva-akarshan which seemingly refers to the sun. The Vedas are dated around 3000 B.C. to 1000 B.C. Thus the heliocentric idea could have existed in a rudimentary form in the days of the Rig Veda and was refined further by astronomers of a later age. lndian Astronomers like Aryabhatta and Varahamihira who lived between 476 and 587 A.D. made close approaches to the concept of Helicentrism. In the Surya-Siddhanta, an astronomical text dated around 400 A.D., the following appellations have been given to the sun. "He is denominated the golden wombed (Hiranyagarbha), the blessed; as being the generator". He is also referred to as "The supreme source of light (Jyoti) upon the border of darkness - he revolves. bringing beings into being, the creator of creatures". The Surya-Siddhanta also says that "Bestowing upon him the scriptures (Vedas) as gifts and establishing him within the egg as grandfather of all worlds, he himself then revolves causing existence". Chinese Face Reading
The ancient art of face reading has been used since the time of Confucius by Chinese doctors as an aid to diagnosis and a way of helping their patients. Close observation of the face afforded them a deep knowledge of the personality of their patients. There were also professional face readers during this time who combined the roles of priest, astrologer and counsellor. They were well-educated men with great compassion for human frailty. The Chinese understood the concept that the face represents the energies, health and fortune of a person and they wished to live in harmony with these, and with the prevailing energies of the five elements, yin and yang, and the seasons. This wisdom has seen a huge resurgence in the West during the past 20 years with the growth of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Feng Shui and Qi Gong. Chinese face reading is as relevant today as it was in the past and its use is cross cultural. We all have a blend of elements and all faces reflect part of nature’s pattern. Face reading first appeared in China during the 6th century BC, possibly as the speciality of “magic men” not affiliated to any religion. It is thought that they were probably Taoist shamans from rural areas such as Szechwan who specialised in non-traditional divinational arts. By 220 BC, the art of face reading was established in Chinese life and classic treatises, such as the Golden Scissors and Bamboo Chronicles, were written at this time. The Principles of Face Reading The starting principles of face reading are the cosmic energies of the five elements and yin and yang. The elements are symbols and represent qualities of energy within each person which are reflected in the face. An elaborate physical, psychological and emotional profile can be built up, incorporating the energies of the features, the ‘life points’ of the face, the three divisions from top to bottom (forehead, midface and lower face) which show the nervous, circulatory and digestive systems and the facial zones which represent the internal organs. Each face is a map of the past, present and future. The past would be described as our inherited constitution, our mother’s pregnancy, our childhood and adolescence, with either difficulties or support in the family, and our early years as we start out in the world. The present reflects our health at the time of the reading. This is something we create ourselves. Coco Chanel said: “We get the faces we deserve”: inappropriate diet, persistent negative emotions, drugs, toxins and stress all contribute to lines, congestion, and colours on the face. The facial zones affected are related to the internal organs under stress. In the same way that the feet are a microcosm of the whole in Reflexology, so the face shows the inner health status and the person behind the persona. The future is not predestined in Chinese philosophy: acts of compassion can lengthen one’s life, and taking greater care with health can resolve possible future symptoms. Sometimes destiny and the ups and downs of life can be improved by facial surgery – correcting squints helps one’s fortunes during the years 35-40. However, nose jobs which expose the nostrils and shorten the nose can affect the end of the 40s! Balance and proportion are important in face reading, as in Chinese paintings. There needs to be harmony between the mountains (the yang element, represented in the face by the bones) and the rivers, (the yin element which is the soft tissue). Although a face may be considered beautiful by society, in face reading terms it may be too yin (upturned nose, large wide mouth, eyes too far apart, thin eyebrows). Many “waif” models have this look. In our language we have many expressions to describe character traits: “stiff upper lip, pay through the nose, two faced, keeping one’s nose clean, chinless wonder”. We may have forgotten how these came into a language in the first place, but to a face reader the nose is a “money box”, the mouth relates to communication, and the chin signifies determination, ambition and practicality. So, face reading can be used to sum up a person’s energies, to get a health read-out, to assess character, to help gain self knowledge and to plan for good health. Types of Face Each of the five elements has a corresponding face shape which tells the face reader that certain energies, talents, or possible health problems may be found in this person’s make up. Most people’s faces show mixed elements and thus harmony or conflict can help to determine how the person will use their energies. Harmony and balance of the elements and features can indicate times of life which are easy, while the converse can mean difficulties, poor health or bad luck. However, all the indications must be taken into account before a full reading can be done. The Chinese also say that the eyes rule the face and that a steady glow or “glitter” in the eyes shows a strong heart-spirit or lack of inner stress which can mitigate against times when the energy will be low. This certain glow of energy indicates that the heart is straight and will enhance good features and modify imbalances. Confucius said: “Look into a person’s pupils – he cannot hide himself”. Wood face Fire face Earth face Metal face Water face The Wood Face The wood type has a long face and long nose, a broad and high forehead and narrow cheeks. The eyes should have a kindly look, and the hair and eyebrows should not be thick or wiry. The forehead should be high and wide in wood as mental direction is important for this elemental type. Wood has the energy of growth, seeing the overall picture and a vision of the future, planning and seeing through projects. Wood types with balanced faces are leaders, administrators and organisers with strong ideals. They are capable of shouldering much responsibility and willing to work for the benefit of others. They need to grow and achieve, as this is the way they learn about themselves and their path in life. One of the challenges of the wood element is to be able to “see the wood for the trees” and not get enmeshed in structures. The Chinese say that a balanced wood face is a pre-requisite for Government. The emotion that relates to wood is anger which is also the energy used for growth, development and reaching maturity. It is the desire to assert who we are and to fulfil our vision. When this desire is frustrated and blocked it can become explosive anger (the yang aspect) or implode into depression (yin aspect). If the wood type cannot put out “new twigs” every year the “tree” gets very stunted and this can translate into irritability, frustration and indecisiveness instead of good judgement, self motivation, precision and sound planning. Blockages in the free and easy flow of wood energy makes the liver and gall bladder susceptible to disease as well as causing headaches, PMT, digestive problems, gallstones, and ulcers. Foods to be avoided are oily or greasy food, and alcohol. Examples of wood faces are Tony Blair and Prince Charles, although Prince Charles’s eyes are smaller than Tony Blair’s, indicating a more reserved personality. The Fire Face The fire type also has a long face with narrow, prominent cheekbones, pointed chin and a more pointed forehead than the wood type. They may have freckles, red, curly or wiry hair, rapid speech and quick body movements. The fire element brings warmth and enthusiasm to the personality with a capacity to inspire and get people “fired up”. They are active and outdoorsy, goal centred, fast paced and adventurous. They can sometimes take crazy risks, and constantly seek stimulation and excitement. If the fire goes out, the fire type becomes a rather withdrawn and timid character, lacking in joy and motivation. The challenges of the fire element are to find that warmth and positive joy inside. You can see this in the eyes – if the “glitter” or sparkle of the eyes is controlled – think of Ram Dass, the spiritual teacher. Excess fire can make you prone to heart problems, anxiety and insomnia or skin rashes. Fire types need to include some bitter foods into their diet from time to time such as chicory, dandelion, and burdock. Blood nourishing foods and herbs are an important consideration for them. Some do very well on ginseng.The Earth Face Earth personalities are characterised by short square faces with distinct jawlines, sallow complexions, thickset bodies and deep voices. The features can be large, especially the mouth which relates to the stomach and intestines. Earth has the ability to be still and to build a solid base in life. Earth types are practical, persevering, reliable, stoical and careful with money and make good treasurers. They are not so dreamy or idealistic as wood types and not as swayed by emotion as water types. They tend towards the traditional ways of doing things and can have problems with worry, food issues, stomach and spleen disorders, and assimilating food (and life) and transforming these into Qi energy. The stomach channel runs along the jaw line and a weak earth can mean no jaw line. Conversely, too much earth can signify a tendency to stubbornness, selfishness and a reluctance to change. The emotion of sympathy is associated with the earth element – this can manifest as over-caring and nurturing, or a lack of sympathy and inability to nurture oneself. Nutritional advice, supplementation and digestive enzymes are often suitable for earth types. A diet which avoids sugar and dairy is suitable as these foods tend to “blow out” the digestion and create what the Chinese call “damp” – a form of internal mucus which gets trapped in the connective tissue and causes symptoms such as heavy legs, bloating, excess catarrh, muzzy heads and lethargy. The challenges for earth personalities are to be in the material world and to experience fruition, harvest, nurturing of self and others, rhythms, stillness and a sense of being centred and grounded. Two classic earth shaped faces are David Coulthard, the racing driver, and Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington. Both these faces show the yang aspect of earth which is focused intention. The Metal Face The metal face is oval with widely set, chevron cheekbones and a pale complexion. Usually good looking, they have clear, shining eyes with a lot of energy coming out of them. The eyebrows are pale, the speech is clipped and the hair is usually straight. They are good advisers, lawyers and counsellors. Metal is the element of the mind and so they are strong willed and solve their own problems. A good sense of humour, lively outlook and hardworking attitudes are all facets of metal at its best. At its worst, it can become toxic with negative thoughts, cut off and caustic, with a “why is this happening to me?” mentality. Metal types also make good teachers and healers. When depressed, they suffer with diseases of the respiratory system and lower intestines. It is important for them to breathe deeply to let in the heavenly Qi and to make sure that they eat good quality food with lots of minerals, and stay away from junk food which can be difficult for them to eliminate. They tend to respond well to psychotherapy, homoeopathy, Bach flower remedies and treatment protocols which are rational and well thought out. To feel happy, they need to express their creativity or the bright shining metal gets dull and rusty. Classic metal faces: Charlotte Rampling and Lauren Bacall who used their metal creativity in their acting careers. The Water Face Water personalities can be recognised by their round, chubby, soft faces and sometimes, rotund bodies. Large soft eyes are a water feature as is dark hair and colouring. Water people are quiet and gentle, much ruled by sensation and susceptible to any appeal to the emotions. They are good communicators and storytellers and are sensitive, and aware of trends either at work or society. They can be psychic and make good listeners, carers and counsellors. There is an aliveness and vitality about clear water which can attract what it needs like a magnet, unlike wood types, for example, who decide what they want and then make a plan about how to get it. If the water is clear, they have strong reserves and the ability to flow freely in any situation. If it gets stagnant through unexpressed emotions, the skin can develop a blue tinge with dark rings under the eyes. Like pure fire faces, the classic water face is quite rare. Most people are mixtures, and some have a lot of water in their face, although the basic shape may be wood, earth or metal. Excess soft tissue means held in anxieties and deep emotions which may be affecting the kidney energy. Although the water type is often very ambitious, too much yin can mean that they get bogged down and lethargic. The water element rules the kidneys which hold the essence of life and are the foundation of yin and yang. Long term stress, particularly mental stress and overwork, deplete kidney yin which can no longer cool the body, giving rise to inflammatory conditions and inner heat. Examples of water faces: Queen Victoria, who loved telling and hearing stories, and Deng Xiao Ping, the late Chinese Premier, whose large ears showed huge constitutional kidney reserve which helped him to remain in office into his nineties. The Face as a Map One of the core beliefs in Chinese medicine is that the part contains the whole. The idea of the face as a map can be applied in many ways, not just as in indicator of past and future health, or times of life, but also as a way to diagnose organs and body parts. This is based on pathways of the deep and superficial meridians and on the three divisions from top to bottom. Kidney If you’ve been overworking, worrying, not sleeping, drinking too much coffee and trying to juggle too many commitments, look at your kidney/liver area which is the half moon-shaped area under the eye. If the area is puffy and blue, you are working too hard, depleting your adrenals, eating too much rich food and causing an imbalance in the fluid balance of the body. Look at your ears and if they are redder than the skin on your face, you are overworking your adrenal glands. This also applies if the inner corner of the eye has a sunken, dark blue look to it. Liver However, if the area is dark brown and has a congested look, your liver is showing signs of “liver energy stagnation”. This could mean that your liver is stressed, possibly through pent-up frustration or anger or rich food and alcohol. If this indication is combined with one-sided headaches, jaw tension and two vertical lines between the eyebrows you could find that fat and hormone metabolism is affected. If the two vertical lines from the end of the eyebrows are combined with two smaller hook-shaped lines, this means that the gall bladder is also showing stress. Spots and lines on the forehead point to congestion from too much oily food or dairy. Stomach and Intestines The mouth shows the energy of the stomach and intestines and the lower part of the face relates to the lower abdomen. Congestion such as white spots or a granular-like feeling under the skin and blotchy areas may point to yeast infection, too much dairy or sugar in the diet. If the chin is red and swollen, it may mean that there is a structural weakness in the organs, candida or stuck energy in the abdomen. If the lower lip protrudes, this shows a sluggish colon and if the top lip is cracked, red, or has spots at the corner, this could indicate stomach acidity or heat caused by inappropriate diet. Lines which go down the cheek from the inner corner of the eye are another indication of a bowel problem. A yellow colour around the mouth and lack of tone in the mouth indicate that the digestive energy is weak and a change of diet and enzymes are needed. On the other hand, a green colour indicates that the liver is the prime cause of the problem. Very thin lips indicate someone who may have workaholic tendencies. Lungs Redness, puffiness and breakouts around the nostrils and lower cheek indicate too many dairy products which produce mucus and congestion in the lungs. You may be on the verge of a bronchial infection if this area suddenly becomes red and dry. Energy and Vitality The eyebrows relate to our creative, mental and sexual energies and the amount of drive and go we have. They are also a pointer to how we relate to others, family and society. The larger and thicker they are, then the more forceful, driven, active and possibly aggressive their owner will be . By contrast, fine eyebrows denote sensitivity and less robust health . Hairs growing in different directions show a restless mind, someone who needs help to focus , while pointed eyebrows belong to someone who is innovative, determined, independent and likes to be first in everything they do. Dark crescent-shaped eyebrows belong to people who need to make decisions intuitively and like to work with others. They show strong water energy . Thyroid problems are indicated by eyebrows which dissipate at the ends. The elements present in a face indicate the strengths and weaknesses that the person has to deal with in this life; the shape of features set the pattern and timing of events in a life. The zones show current and potential health patterns. So, when reading a face it is important to take each feature within the context of the whole.

The science of cheiromancy has oft been the ill-reputed recipient of skepticism, scorn, and disdain. It is true, that this practice at one time fell from the favor of the general populace…into the grubbing hands of charlatans and "quacks", and many would argue that it has not yet left this seat. Yet are there not other, well-greeted sciences who are plagued with their share of chicanery? Yet those who are beguiled and led astray by these villains seem few and scattered, simply because the pretense under which they were deceived was more "credible". There are a great many prejudices abounding in this world, and a great precedent has most unfortunately descended upon this notable science. It is the solemn intent of this defense to put the reader at rest concerning the dubious issues of cheiromancy, and to open his mind to a fascinating and powerful science whose tenets are no less shaky than other sciences; its only want being a relatively small corpus of research upon which to build itself. The science of cheiromancy predates Christianity itself, and yet it is ostracized. The esteemed scientists, philosophers, and cornerstones of thought such as Aristotle, Pliny, Paracelsus, Anaxagoras, Hispanus, Cardamis, Albertus Magnus, and Emperor Augustus all sanctioned this fascinating discipline, yet it is dismissed with but a cursory glance. The bible itself speaks of the portentous markings in one"s hand, as in the book of Job: "God placed signs or seals in the hands of men, that all men might know their works, and there is always the timeless knowledge that Deus et natura nihil efficiunt frustra (God and nature make nothing in vain). Alas, the fickleness of religion was marked once again, and the winds changed for cheiromancy as it was disowned and left to those sly and base individuals who would profane its untarnished record with crimes of greed. To this, Cheiro offers wry remark: "the history of any dominant religion is the history of the opposition to knowledge, unless that knowledge proceeds from its teachings. And so this knowledge was left to wallow in the perfidious hands of its newfound caretakers. The Hindus, the Greeks, the Christians, and many other learned cultures embraced this science–could it have been all for naught? Why the fascination with a discipline now deemed little more than curious in the eyes of contemporary society? They were fascinated with life, humanity, and self-discovery. They sought knowledge of themselves, for He who veined the leaves of trees and plants so that the skilled botanist could read their story from the lines in the leaves, has so lined the human palm that the scientist can with equal facility read therein the story of human life. And what more reasonable a map than that which is laid out in the hand? Consider that the hand is one of the most important components of the body. It cannot perform a single action without the brain(8), and there are more nerves from the brain to the hand than to any other portion of the body. Those who are dumb or are otherwise unable to enunciate effectively use sign language; for the latter it is easier to communicate via these hands, these messengers of the mind. We write with them, touch with them, and touch others–is not one caress more soothing than a thousand words of reason? These civilizations had good reason to study mankind through the hands–their shape, their texture, and the lines within them–and what a noble cause this was! However, this is the age wherein the advances of man may clash with religion, and religion be not sufficient comfort for the intellect. And so, the defense dedicates the remainder of its argument upon the sound and just principles of the scientific method. During the scourge of the bubonic plague, many patients in Italy were treated in hospitals in which the doctors wore waxen robes in attempt to stave off infection from themselves. Their methods of treatment were often ill-informed and even superstitious, but it was considered standard practice at the time. One doctor, chagrined with the state of affairs, remarked that the robes they wore seemed to help little, and only served to protect its wearer from the infestation of fleas rampant in the hospital. How close he was to discovering the cause of this epidemic, yet how peculiar, and consequently unnoticed, were his observations! "Yet specialization confines man to a very narrow line of thought. If man could only keep a more broad, charitable perspective towards science, he would discover a great many more things indeed. How is it that cheiromancy is so easily discredited when there is no field in accepted science that studies the hands? There are podiatrists, oncologists, obstetricians, and doctors who specialize in the hygiene of the scalp, yet there are no official "cheirologists?" Have you ever known one to dedicate themselves to exclusive study in that especial field? And yet, those who have not given any thought to the science dismiss it, and are quick to discredit those who have spent far more time in its study. In order to diagnose a patient, doctors must first examine the symptoms of the patient. Yet a palmist knows none of this beforehand, so he is "declared a charlatan at the slightest misstep! Science terms the lines upon our palm as "flexure creases", as folds in the flesh that appear where the joints in the hand would create them. However, "this contention is easily refuted, by an inspection of the hands–your own for instance–which will disclose lines in positions utterly at variance with so puerile a contention. Furthermore, this definition does not explain the partial alignment or the rapid appearance and fading on the hands. As one can see, medical science does not possess as firm a grip as its momentum as a credible science would lead one to believe. And yet, assertions rising from Cheiromancy are quickly put to rest. "It is because Cheiromancy is fanciful and inconsistent." This is rubbish, for there are just as many factions within medical science: homeopathic, allopathic, even chiropractic medicine, all claiming dissimilar explanations and treatments for the same phenomenon. Who is to say which explanation is the best? And how many possess the amount of knowledge that would allow them to decide with confidence? Cheiromancy is a science just as any other, for it adheres to the definition laid out by Dugald Stewart: All philosophical inquiry, and all that practical knowledge which guides our conduct in life, presupposes such an established order in the succession of events as enables us to form conjectures concerning the future from the observation of the past. Cheiromancy is no arbitrary system; it has laid its principles upon a foundation of empirical evidence and shrewd observation. There may be inaccuracies, but as a progressive science is is entitled to err on occasion, just as any other science may have a disproven hypothesis. We should not fear the occasional setback, however. "There are hundreds of mysteries, even in the simple things of life, that the finite mind cannot fathom, but we cannot afford to discard them because we do not know their cause. This is the unknown, the event horizon of knowledge, and Cheiromancy mans the helm of its own vessel right alongside the more commonly recognized bastions of science. It should be thought of no less for its obscurity, for "If any science, art, or work has for its beginning, its object, and its end the improvement of humanity and the advancement of the race, then that work, art, or science deserves the encouragement and recognition that is its due. A Basic Overview of the Palm The following presentation is meant to guide the reader in interpreting the lines and markings of the hand though a generalized, deductive approach. Though some texts provide examples of configurations of the hand for rote memorization, this author prefers to establish a generalized framework by which the intelligent cheiromancer may discern for themselves what the import of a specific set of markings mean, for there are far too many combinations of features of the hand for it to be worthwhile to memorize. This overview is further divided into four sections: Divisions of the Palm Texture and Composition of the Hand The Colors of the Lines and Flesh Qualities of the Lines Divisions of the Palm The palm is divided into four sections, as indicated in the diagram to the left. These quadrants are divided by two lines. The line which divides the hand between inward perspective and outward perspective is roughly defined by the Line of Fate, though should this line be aberrant in any respect, it is the vertical line that would pass straight through the finger above the mount of Saturn. The line which separates the ideal from the material is more strictly defined as the division created by the Line of Head. A further explanation is warranted, and will begin with the division between inward and outward perspective. An individual is often torn between two worlds–what he believes and how he expresses these beliefs, the difference between these two being known as cognitive dissonance. An individual may feel something very strongly, but may act upon them differently with others, perhaps to make themselves a martyr, perhaps to promote social harmony, or perhaps because they are willing to sacrifice some ideals for a greater good. A good example of this can be seen in the Mounts of Mars. The Mount of Lower Mars represents an individual"s outward aggression, and lies in the demesne of outward perspective. Contained in the inward realm, however, is the Mount of Upper Mars, which signifies how stubborn an individual is with their beliefs. Both mounts relate to the same belief, but approach this belief from two different sides: The outward expresses this belief to others, while the inward is a true reflection of the individual"s passions and thought processes. The other division is how and to what extent an individual interacts with the material world versus the ideal world. The optimal place to commence in this explanation is in the Line of Head itself. A steep, sloping Line of Head betokens a very creative, idealistic individual. The reason for this is not necessarily to be found in the slope, but the amount of area it allocates for the upper, ideal portion of the hand. An observer may well notice that a steep Line will devote much more space to matters of the mind, and consequently decrease space devoted to material concerns. And these material concerns are as what one may expect: money, food, spirits, athleticism, and other such things as take on a physical existence. This is where we find the Line of Life and the Line of Health, both of which deal with the physical constitution of the body. One who lives in a material world may be obese as a lover of food, or vainly opulent, indulging in luxuries and possessions. They operate well in matters of the world, for their drive to assume ever more possessions sparks many an entrepreneurial venture. On the other side of this division lies those interested with ideas, such as scientists, spiritualists, artists, and priests. For them the collection of physical possessions is not nearly as important as the collection of ideas and feelings. It is in this realm that both the Line of Head and the Line of Heart exist, for one deals with ideas, the other with passions, both of which are utterly intangible. These individuals invent and inspire, but their intellectual dynamism is a powerful front for their frail, idealistic natures. As this is exclusively connected with the Line of Head, it is not surprising that a very steep Line may sometimes portend a tendency to suicide, as harsh reality suffocates so many of the beautiful ideals one may conceive of. Of course, the previous cases are simply extremes. Most individuals find themselves at a comfortable balance between the ideal and material, the inward and the outward. But the reader should always bear these divisions in mind when interpreting both mounts and lines, for they will prove to be extremely useful landmarks in both interpreting and remembering the science of cheiromancy. Texture and Composition of the Hand How firm or soft a hand is may temper the entire reading. The following are the different types of textures the reader may encounter whilst practicing cheiromancy: Smooth hands–For one to possess smooth hands betokens a very calm and unruffled temperament. These individuals will rarely lose their temper. Rough hands–To possess rough hands denotes the opposite. Their temper is uneven and easy to rouse. Such individuals usually are more coarse and earthy, and are more fascinated with the concrete than abstract ideas. Lined hands, that is, hands that are networked with a large amount of fine lines, reveal a person who is fretful, worrisome, and easily vexed. Soft hands–To possess soft hands betokens sloth. Though an individual may possess brilliant markings designing great talent, if the hand be soft, they will find motivation difficult, and perseverance even moreso. These hands have a tendency for sensuality. Firm hands–Firm hands denote a great deal of energy and drive; an active nature. Those with firm hands will start many projects, often simultaneously, and possess the energy and followthrough to see them to their end. Hard hands–If the hands be hard but not springy, and instead bony and tough, the individual lacks energy and enthusiasm. This lacking differs from soft, fleshy hands, however: in the case of soft hands, the individual possesses the energy, but it goes to waste through laziness; in hard hands, there is no energy to begin with. It means a dispassionate, selfish, and potentially pessimistic nature. Naturally, a hand may possess a combination of the above qualities, for it is possible to have a soft, smooth hand or a hard rough hand. The Colors of the Lines and Flesh The various colors the reader may encounter importune the same for hands and lines alike. Red indicates a great robustness. A red hand will be passionate, quick-tempered, and ardent. This extreme vivaciousness, however, may end in apoplexy. A red line will indicate much of the same, but it will be modified by the function of the line, i.e. a red line of life will indicate a vigorous, robust health coupled with an active nature, while a red line of heart will denote overflowing and heartfelt emotion. Yellow is the mark of the melancholy and morose. Pink denotes a hopeful, sanguine, enthusiastic, and bright nature. One may consider it to be a less extreme manifestation of a red hand or line. This is the optimal color for any line in a healthy, well-adjusted person. White denotes a lack of interest in the outside world and those with whom the bearer may associate. White hands are egotistical, consequenting in selfishness and a lack of sympathy for others. It is also a symbol for general ill-health and weakness. A dark or black line denotes a trait of a person as grave, haughty, distant, and vengeful. Qualities of the Lines When diagnosing the import of a line, color, length, and direction are not enough. Often the manner in which the line is etched into the palm will indicate its overall power. A deeply-cut line strengthens the influence of the line over other traits. The deepest line on a palm signifies the most important aspect of their life, i.e. a deeply-cut Line of Heart would designate an emotional, passionate person, while a deep Line of Head would betray an individual enamored with ideas and the intellect. A thin line indicates the opposite, as would be expected. A thin line will have little influence over the bearer"s life, just as a thin Line of Fate would show little direction in life and a thin Line of Life would show weakness of constitution. A broad, shallow line is also a sign of weakness, but typically due to physical factors, either congenital or incidental. All of the above lines preclude the normal line, which is straight, firm, light pink in hue, and clearly marked on the palm. Apart from the primary and secondary lines, there may be lines of chance and influence that rise and fall. One may discern whether a line is rising or falling by the varying thickness of a line. The thicker end of the line marks the point at which it gives rise, and the waning end marks its terminus.(78) The meaning of the left and right hands. As many newcomers to cheiromancy are apt to ask, "which hand should be consulted when reading the palm?" It is unanimous that both palms need to be considered. One is the hand with which the bearer was born, indicating the potential of the subject. The other is a glimpse into the future livelihood of the individual, revealing how their potential shall be harnessed or squandered, how they shall avoid the perils marked on the hand of the past, and how they shall create new ones for themselves. Though the cheiromancers agree on the importance of both hands, there are disparate views of what the right and left hands mean. There are some who contend that the right hand predicts the future, the left a past history. Others claim that it is the hand which is used the most frequently by the individual that foretells the future, while the more neglected hand is the marked by the past. One author claimed that it was the right hand that portended the future on men, whilst the left did so on women! However, if the reader give the same thought this author did upon the subject, it should become quite clear which perspective to elect. The hand of the past is the hand one is born with, the hand that from the first day reveals the aptitudes, constitution, temperament, and talents of the bearer. If this truly be the hand one was born with, should its imprint not be crystallized in time for later comparison? But comparison with what? The hand of the future, that which has seen the action, the life, and the changes of the individual that has caused it to differ with the hand of the past. This hand that has seen the industry of life has changed due to its activity. As the bearer uses their hands, they will favor one over the other, and this hand will see more activity than the other. "Depending on the way you hold you hands, certain mounts may be more developed," and so too for the lines and overall composition of the hand. Thus, would it not stand to reason that this frequently used hand, in its activity, has erased some lines that the individual was born with, and created others? At both times of business and leisure, they will be altering the very shape of their more frequently-used hand, while the neglected hand will experience little change. Thus, in right-handed individuals, the right hand reveals the future, while the left hand the past; it is just the opposite for those who have merited the distinction of being left-handed. One may inquire further as to which hand should be consulted in the case of ambidexterity. This is a difficult matter, for if the individual is truly ambidextrous, it will be uncertain as to whether either hand has preserved the past. As a general rule of thumb, seek the hand that is used to write as the active hand. Careful interrogation may also give insight to a slight bias to a particular hand. Use caution, however, when remarking on great changes they have made in life, for the contrast is not as pronounced in the ambidextrous. Table of Namesakes Throughout the centuries, the markings and features of the palm have established a considerable repertoire of pseudonyms, the most common of which are displayed below. Some names are fairly interchangeable, while some are clearly outdated and potentially confusing, such as the archaic reference to the heart line as the "mensal" line.
